Team Heritage Park

Communities in Schools of Wake County (CISWC) aims to keep students in school and prepare them for solid futures. The non-profit agency operates programs in five after-school learning centers and 13 schools. Since 2001, the Junior League of Raleigh has teamed with CISWC to provide volunteer and financial support at its Heritage Park Community Learning Center.

Each year, about 25 League members work at the center, located in a downtown Raleigh Housing Authority neighborhood. These volunteers help and encourage students in grades K-12 with their schoolwork, stressing the importance of education and goal-setting. They also provide enrichment programs and events that help students: broaden their horizons; develop their talents, skills and dreams; and be part of a safe, positive community.

For 2007-2008, JLR volunteers are working through four committees:

  • Events, which plans activities honoring academic success, as well as themed festivals and events such as the Holiday Shopping Spree, in which students use "money" earned through good behavior, grades and program participation to buy gifts for family, teachers and friends.
  • Girl Scout Troop 1830, which offers a program for Juniors and Cadets (grades 3-8) based on the Girl Scout law and the mission of developing girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place.
  • Homework Helpers, which provides after-school tutoring, reading practice and other academic assistance.
  • Teen Club, which helps middle and high school students explore careers and learn about higher education, as well as enjoy enrichment activities in areas such as the arts.

The League also continues to develop and use the Natural Learning Environment, which it created outside, adjacent to the center. This tree-filled area includes a gazebo, stage, picnic tables, benches, planting beds and other features.

Through our efforts, we connect children with caring adult role models and truly make a difference in their lives every day.

Goals for this year:

  • Provide academic support and encouragement to students to stay in school and plan for higher education and careers.
  • Help students broaden horizons, build skills, develop talents, take positive risks and give back to the community.
  • Increase consistent one-on-one interaction and engagement among students and every volunteer.
  • Continue to advance partnership with Communities in Schools of Wake County and explore ways to maximize impact.
  • Educate and train team members to be effective community volunteers and advocates who understand how the Junior League makes a difference.
  • Give members an opportunity to have fun and feel connected.
