Historical Highlights

In 1901 several young women in New York became concerned with the plight of the people in the slums in their city. This group became the nucleus of what was to become the first Junior League. From the recognition and that good intentions alone were not enough evolved the Junior League principle of training for service.

Soon similar organizations were formed in various large cities, and in 1912 seven independent groups adopted the name "Junior League" and met for the first Annual Conference. In 1921, twenty-four Leagues incorporated The Association of Junior Leagues of America. In 1923 an Admissions Committee was formed to set standards for applying groups. In the same year the Association sub-divided itself into regions, which achieved closer lines of communication among the Leagues.

Each Junior League is autonomous and responsive to the needs of its own community. Each League constructs its own program of training and service in accordance with these needs. The Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc (AJLI) unites the members Leagues and promotes their individual purpose by setting uniform standards along the lines described by the League and by offering assistance, services and resources to help the Leagues maintain these standards.

Junior Leagues have reflected the times through their total involvement in community problems. Because of its dependability, thoroughness and resourcefulness many communities turn to the League to bring together public and private sectors to pool resources for better efficiency in meeting their communities' needs.

Today, the Association includes over 200,000 members in 293 leagues in the United States, Canada, Great Britain and Mexico. The past is but a prologue to the future. Whatever tomorrow's challenges as, the Junior Leagues will continue to develop programs of education and volunteer service to prepare their members for effective participation in the community.
