Sustainer Spring Happenings!

Spring is just around the corner, with March 20 marking the first day of this season of growth, renewal and new beginnings. With the coming of spring, Team Sustainer is excited to welcome Mary Blake and Anita Blomme Pinther as the 2016-17 Sustainer Co-captains. We look forward to working alongside and sharing ideas with these two extremely talented and energetic women to ensure a smooth transition of Sustainer leadership. As days become longer and temperatures milder, we hope that you step out for several events that support our community partners and promote connection within the Sustainer membership group. The upcoming March and April events are:

  • Wednesday March 23, 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.: Sustainers will host the SAFEchild Volunteer Appreciation Event at the Julia Jones Daniels Center for Community Leadership. Sustainers are needed for a few remaining spots. For questions or to volunteer email Sustainers@jlraleigh.org.
  • Tuesday March 29, 11:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.: Join Sustainers for a tour at the North Carolina Museum of History to view gowns by the esteemed Raleigh designer Willie Otey Kay and Southern-themed paintings from the James-Farmer Collection, followed by lunch.” $30 includes lunch, tax, tips and the tour docent fee.   • Tuesday April 12, 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.: Sustainer Connect will meet for lunch at Brio Tuscan Grille at Crabtree Valley Mall. For more information email Carleen Shaffer at lcjschaffer@yahoo.com.
  • Sunday April 17, 6:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.: Mingle with League members and friends at the Belk Love My League Fashion Night (formerly Fashion Forward) for shopping, raffles appetizers and beverages followed by a fashion show. Tickets are on sale at http://www.jlraleigh.org/.
  • Tuesday April 26, noon – 2:00 p.m.: Gather for lunch at the Executive Mansion with an optional tour of the mansion offered after lunch. $40 includes lunch. Online register will be required, the registration start date to be announced.

SAFEchild Volunteer Appreciation Event – Sustainer Volunteers Needed! Sustainers will host the SAFEchild Volunteer Appreciation Event on Wednesday March 23 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the CCL. The early evening event will include a social, a panel participants sharing their moving stories, and a speech from Executive Director Cristin DeRonja regarding their new theme of “Be the Key” to SAFEchild’s future. JLR Facebook Sustainer Group – Join Us!

We encourage you to join the JLR Sustainer Facebook Group, a private group for Sustainers to connect and build a community for sharing and supporting each other. We have over 200 members and growing! Contact sustainers@jlraleigh.org for instructions on how to join the JLR Sustainer Facebook Group.

Sustainer Connect Sustainer Connect, led by Carleen Shaffer and Violet Rhinehart, provides a means for Sustainers to informally connect. Sustainer Connect meets for lunch the second Tuesday of every other month. The next gathering will be on April 12 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Brio Tuscan Grille at Crabtree Valley Mall. AventWest Children’s Mentoring Job Announcement Job description: AventWest Children’s Mentoring, an after school tutoring program near North Carolina State University, needs a bus driver for Tuesday and Thursday afternoons to transport students from their homes in the AventWest community to two tutoring sites. The AventWest community is bounded by Avent Ferry Road on the south, Athens Drive and Jones Franklin Road on the west, Hillsborough Street on the north and Gorman Street on the east. The salary is $52.50 per day.

Work schedule: Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 4:00 p.m. – 7:30 p m. during the traditional school year: pick up, 4:10 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. and return 6:10 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Additional time available for special activities.

License and requirements: commercial driver’s license, background check and references.

Community Service Opportunities & Events The SAFEchild Spring Gala will be held on April 15 at Marbles Kids Museum. The annual event is an evening of exquisite food, complimentary wine and beer, a silent and live auction, and much more to benefit SAFEchild’s mission to eliminate child abuse and neglect in Wake County.
